People have been enjoying 3-D movies in the theater for decades. However, advances in 3-D technology have made it more accessible and widespread than ever. Even a few years ago, it was fairly rare to see a 3-D movie. Today, you can watch one right at home. All you need is a 3-D TV, compatible 3-D glasses and 3-D programming. It may sound complicated, but it’s actually easy.
3-D TVs exploded on the scene, and they continue to be very popular. The question now is whether or not it will last. Could it be that 3-D TV is just a fad that’s sure to run its course eventually? The novelty may wear off a little, but it’s unlikely that 3-D TVs are going the way of the dodo any time soon.
More than 3-D
The main reason that 3-D TVs are probably here to stay is because they’re not one-trick ponies. Sure, they are capable of showing 3-D movies and shows, but that’s far from all they do. Most of them are high-quality HDTVs that happen to include 3-D functionality. Because 3-D is at the forefront of TV technology, these devices tend to have some of the latest features. If you were to walk into a store and ask to see the best TV, the one you were shown would probably be a 3-D TV.
Is 3-D Necessary?
Some people love 3-D technology; others can take it or leave it. No matter which category you fall into, you should consider getting a 3-D model the next time you need a new TV. You don’t have to use the 3-D feature if you don’t want to, and it’s nice to have in the event that you do. Different members of the family are sure to have different viewing habits, so it’s nice to have a TV that can handle all kinds of different options.
Do You have to Watch 3-D on a 3-D TV?
A common misconception is that you have to watch everything in 3-D when you have a 3-D TV. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, the majority of the programs and movies you watch aren’t going to be available in 3-D. If these TVs weren’t capable of displaying them, no one would buy them.
With a 3-D TV, you can switch 3-D mode on and off. Some models automatically detect whether or not a program or movie is 3-D capable and react accordingly. At any rate, you’re not going to miss out on anything because you have a 3-D model. If anything, you will have even more possibilities and will be able to take advantage of the latest technologies right at home.
When HD first became widely available, it took a little while for television networks and film companies to catch up. Now, all major satellite and cable TV providers offer extensive amounts of HD programming. Will the same phenomenon occur with 3-D? That remains to be seen. The options are pretty limited at this point, but there is pretty strong demand out there for more 3-D programming.
Many cable and satellite providers offer special 3-D programming. The options aren’t nearly as extensive as they are with HD programming, but they do exist. By investing in a 3-D TV now, you will be able to take advantage of new 3-D programming as it becomes available. Some companies charge extra for it, but it’s not usually too expensive.
You may not be interested in 3-D programming, but what about 3-D movies? Many Blu-rays and DVDs are now being produced to be compatible with 3-D TVs. This is a strong sign that 3-D TVs aren’t going away any time soon. More movies are being made available in 3-D every day, so 3-D TVs are probably here to stay.
The 3-D Trend Continues
The easiest way to tell whether or not 3-D TVs will continue to be popular is by considering how many 3-D movies are in the theater. If the number starts to dwindle away, it would suggest that people are losing interest in 3-D technology. If fewer movies are released in 3-D for the theater, fewer will be released in 3-D on DVDs and Blu-rays. While this scenario is possible, it’s unlikely. At any rate, there’s no risk in buying a 3-D TV. Even if 3-D goes away, the TV will still work just as well.
